Credit Card Reward Programs

First, compute what you are spending versus what you are paying. In other words, if you are the type who cannot pay back a credit card balance in full every month then there is no point in trying to chase those rewards points with additional purchases because you are already losing money from interest charges or late fees.

You should also look for any hidden costs. There are certain reward credit cards that actually carry additional costs like processing fees. Some of the fees may actually be more than the cost of the reward itself.

There are numerous credit cards out there that offer their own unique rewards programs. Try to find out which cards offer the rewards that you want or will have use for. For example, a rewards program that centers on petrol rebates is not useful if you rarely drive. This also applies with rewards cards that give you frequent flyer points. Credit card companies pay more to give this kind of reward. But if you know that you will not be able to charge enough to redeem airline miles or if certain restrictions will prevent you from redeeming your rewards, then you are better off getting another card that does not offer airline miles. If you are at a loss as to what kind of rewards program to apply to, consider getting a debit rewards card instead. A debit rewards card offers far fewer benefits, but it also gives you the opportunity to avoid running a debt on your credit card.
